The Architect

When I started putting together this revised version of the website I took a number of digital photos of various artifacts in and around the church to use as graphical accents on the pages of the site. One of the more interesting discoveries that I made was a strangely-inscribed stained glass window above the main entrance doorway. I had never really noticed it before because, as with all stained glass, it looks better when seen from inside and I guess most people aren't looking up as they leave the building.

I came across it later as I was going through the photos that I had taken and decided out of curiosity to Google the inscription. It turns out that my first guess, which was German, was wrong, and the inscription was in fact in Norwegian, although it was not immediately clear what it meant.

I immediately popped next door to talk to my neighbor who is a native Norwegian speaker. She was able to give me a rough translation, but it was made harder by the fact that it was in a different dialect to the one she was raised with. Fortunately even a rough translation sufficed, because I recognized the quotation immediately at this one:

"As for me and my household we will serve the Lord" - Joshua 24:15 (fragment)

She confirmed that that translation fitted, so I started to wonder how it got there. As it turns out a chance conversation with Jean Hull over the Faith Alive weekend revealed that it was placed there to honor the architect of the current building, who was a Norwegian.
